Is the job market turning around?
Every morning on the news there is always a blurb or two about Americas job market. They are usually cautiously optimistic about its turn around, after all there are always positions to be filled from locum jobs for doctors to bagging up produce at the supermarket. However the amount of people actually unemployed for a longer period of time does not seem to be changing. The news the other day reported that there were companies that did not want to hire people who were already unemployed.
They were actually instructing the firms that were doing the hiring not to interview people who did not already have a job. This seems very counter productive to our economic situation as a whole. If the person that has been unemployed was unemployed due to no fault of their own, such as a company closing due to the economy it makes no sense not to consider them for the position.
If companies continue down this road of just accepting employees from other companies where does that leave the people who are unemployed? It seems to me that it is a strange form of discrimination. While it may be legal to do so, and I’m really not sure if it is, it seems ethically questionable. Hopefully more companies will not take this same path. Qualified and educated people who are unemployed deserve a chance to find a job.
The explanations of companies with these policies simply do not make much sense. There is no reason to place astigmatism on a group of people who lost their jobs in a recession. I would like to believe the optimistic news that we are on an upturn and coming out of the recession slowly. I am not sure that the hard data backs up the claims but in the end it is a nice thought to get out of bed in the morning with. I am not sure about anyone else, but having nice thoughts always start my day off right. The last thing I want to think about when I get up is this whole mess.
